Fiber cassette is mainly used to help managers to control a number of cables and connection points inside a standard cassette structure. It can not only protect the optical links of data center from physical damage, but also greatly save space and increase the wiring density of data center. In addition, with the use of fiber cassette, the cable management and maintenance become easier and simpler. In this way, to some extent, the installation and maintenance costs of data center can be reduced.
In most applications of data center, rack-mounted fiber cassette is often used. Since most rack-mounted network devices are 19 inches, the width of rack-mounted fiber cassettes are standard 19 inches, but the height has a variety of sizes. We use “RU” for the height of rack-mounted fiber cassette and 1RU is 1.75 inches. The height of rack-mounted fiber cassette can be 1 RU, 2 RU, 3 RU, 4 RU and so on(shown in the following figure).
In order to meet different needs of data center, there are various types of fiber cassettes which are classified according to different aspects.
1RU rack-mounted fiber cassette is commonly used in data center. According to different using ways, 1RU rack-mounted fiber cassettes are designed for three types: Clamshell fiber cassette, sliding fiber cassette and rotational fiber cassette. Clamshell fiber cassette is the earliest type of fiber cassette which is low in price but not easy to use. Sliding and rotational fiber cassette are slightly high in price, but they can make it easy to install and maintain the cables inside the cassette. We just need to pull or spin out the tray of cassette for easily handling the fiber, without having to removing the fiber cassette from the rack first.
As we all know that fiber adapter is an essential component of a fiber cassette and it is usually installed on the front panel. The number of fiber adapter is directly related to the port density of fiber cassette. In a word, the front panel of fiber cassette has two types: fixed and not fixed.
The width of front panel fixed fiber cassette is standard 19 inches and the number of fiber adapter on it is usually fixed.
While front panel not fixed fiber cassette can install 3 or even 5 detachable fiber adapter panels, and now it is widely favored for high-density cabling, plug and play, flexible cable management.
Pigtail fusion splicing and pre-termination are two basic methods of fiber termination. According to this, rack-mounted fiber cassette has two different designs: pigtail fusion splicing fiber cassette and pre-termination fiber cassette. Inside pigtail fusion splicing fiber cassette, there is a fiber splicing tray which is used for the management and placement of spliced fibers on working site; while inside pre-termination fiber cassette, there is only spools for managing the fiber optic cables. Obviously, pre-termination fiber cassette eliminates the step of fiber termination on working site, greatly saving installation time and labor costs.
Usually, the front panel of 1RU sliding fiber cassette can install four fiber adapter panels and install one or multiple fiber splicing trays inside cassette. Fiber cassette with this design is suitable for application which needs to splice fibers on working site and can provide effective protection for fiber splicing point.
There are four fiber adapter panels on front panel of fiber cassette, and inside cassette, there are two spools. It is a kind of pre-termination fiber cassette which can greatly save installation time and labor costs.
1RU sliding fiber cassette can install at most four MTP cassettes, realizing the smooth transfer from MTP backbone cabling to LC cabling system. It is the ideal solution for 10 G to 40 G/100 G high-density cabling.
With more and more fiber optic cables used in data center, fiber cabling system becomes more and more complicated. In the process of high-density cabling, we should not only pay attention to the requirement of fiber cable density and management, but also think about how to protect fiber cables and provide reliable network performance. Therefore, it is important to choose a suitable fiber cassette according to different requirements of data center high-density cabling application.
